[The optimistic strategy to split watch throughout their cabana has hit a snag.
Returning from a bit of late-night research at the bookstore, Waltaquin finds herself coming across the common area outside the cabanas, walking in between the communal hammocks set up there...but she can go no further. The unexpected, invisible corralling is quite galling. She dislikes the constraint; it easily dulls any of the more exciting aspects of the existential dread that's become commonplace on the island.
It's just her and her housemate here, or so it seems. In lieu of pacing, Quin sits tensely on the edge of one of the hammocks, her hands folded together in her lap.]
Hyeheheh... so much for our well-laid plans. Haven't found a way around here, have you?
[ Sonya had been coming back from an evening wandering about himself when he spotted his fellow kakapo just ahead of him. What good fortune he thought, at least until it became apparent that they weren't going anywhere. ]
Unfortunately not. [ His expression is calm as always, though his arms are folded in thought. ]
We made it back to our lodging at least, or nearly so. It could be much worse.
[So close, and yet so far...It could be a lot worse, certainly, but the near-miss of it all has her teeth on edge. He doesn't seem particularly bothered by it, so she doubts he can be convinced to experiment too much with dismantling whatever this field happens to be.]
Maybe an extension of their modern magic... At any rate, you and I will be keeping watch at the same time, at least for now. If I was going to disobey the schedule I'd have preferred to do it on my own terms.
Flattery on a night like this? [Oppressive, the sense of dread having cracked like a bolt of lightning on the other island? She's tickled by it.] If there was ever circumstance for an attempted dalliance... hah.
[At the mention of the sword, she turns to look him over much more appraisingly.]
You're unarmed? [She sounds a bit surprised.] If we're sequestered here, I don't doubt that anything else would have a difficult time getting in, at any rate.
You think you know me well enough to say that, do you? Well, I've never had many secrets.
[She pats the hammock beside her.]
Yes, I saw you fishing with it earlier this week, didn't I?
[The proliferation of harpoons across the vacationers has been hard to miss, though most people seem to be stubbornly or clumsily clinging to them as fishing tools instead of potential implements of violence.]
Throwing arms to a gathered crowd is just going to make them more likely to riot... It might be useful for survival, but I'm sure our hosts have other uses in mind.
[It's useful for him, perhaps. Imagine being bequeathed one as someone who prefers more bombastic methods of offense than simple martial weapons. It's perfectly useless under those circumstances, unless they all intend to become fishermen.]
I prefer a strong offense, but in a situation like this, surely I'm enough to defend us both if we're in trouble.
[In a way, Waltaquin thinks she knew there was something special about him from the moment he complimented her company. Not many here seem particularly tolerant of differences in attitude, and either he had been attempting to manipulate her - and thus, a man with many secrets to keep - or to some extent, the compliment had been genuinely intended.
Quin comes along in the late evening to visit him where he's being held by the beach, hands knit together in front of her.]
It would have been nice to see you play with Billy Butcher a little longer. I really should have kept the other one from interfering.
[Sonya probably would have lost his strength regardless, but she could had dissuaded Shuda from getting in the way of a real one-on-one.]
I suppose I should also say thank you for not killing me where I slept.
Hahaha, of course I do. I wager you found him a bit lax. [To her, Chai had always seemed like someone who didn't do much thinking ahead and was always putting himself in the path of some crazy adventure. At least when Waltaquin gets herself into such situations, it's in pursuit of hidden knowledge from times immemorial, curses that could change the tide of sorcery itself.
But she digresses mentally. After all the effort he'd gone through, it did seem to fizzle out in the end. Embarrassing. She leans forward a bit.]
Care to tell me a bit about that? You left a very intriguing riddle. It's enough to send shivers down anyone's spine. [The gummy worms...truly a clotting agent no one would expect.]
[ Sorry sometimes he's just like this too, it's fine. ]
I'm not certain it's so much a riddle but rather, a technology. One I'm certain Vergilius is familiar with, but his penchant for doing as little as possible worked in my favor. Or that might have been the remaining wishpower too.
But first, do you believe in good fortune? Or barring that, the power of wishes? The very human trait of desiring what may seem improbable?
[Oh a rare Vergilius drag? Her ears can't help but perk at that, but she doesn't ask after it.]
Good fortune, certainly. Some people are smiled up, and some will never escape their rotten luck. I don't think I've ever see a wish come true without some manpower involved. Wanting something isn't enough.
It requires a lot of hard work, amongst other things.
[ Hmm, how to best explain this... ]
Where I come from, technology known as "Singularities" exist. Put simply, they bring extraordinary things into the realm of possibility. Time manipulation, instant regeneration, and so on. One of these Singularities is wishpower, but it's essentially the essence of luck. Gather up enough and you could win any jackpot with a single coin, or land the lover of your dreams.
I might not have had my sword, but I did have a wishsticker on me at arrival.
[It's foreign to her, but Waltaquin nods, believing she at least has the gist of it. Channeling the power of magic through jade isn't entirely dissimilar.]
It must have been a very grand wish. Perhaps too complicated?
Oh, I didn't use the sticker in the hope of achieving my wish. There wasn't nearly enough wishpower stored up in it for that. Instead, I used to ensure the kill would go off as cleanly as possible, and how I wanted it to.
Someone had to kill, for the greater good. I'm pretty selfless, you know? I gave Vergilius' team something they hadn't earned, because it was the right thing to do. At least, for now.
[ Good morning. Is Sonya's favorite necromancer toiling away in the lab committing sleep crimes? Hopefully she is, because the dead don't respect the time of others; not that Sonya ever did in the first place. ]
My dear Quin, both the aggrieved and the sin itself are pitiable in different ways. Luckily, compassion is a virtue even for sinners.
Hmm, but I like to put my best self forward, particularly when there's competition. Even the technology from the City isn't advanced enough to deliver kisses, particularly ones laced with tropical concoctions, through electronic means.
[ Yes, he saw that. ]
For myself? Nothing. I was merely curious at what the responses would be. Though it would be much better to ask this week, considering how the weekend went.
Saw that, did you? I thought it was great fun. You shall have to ask her if she garnered the same level of enjoyment from her little dare. You don’t event want to atone for not being here to make use of your words? Hehe.
As for the weekend … was the outcome not one worth commendation? They did get on the topic of moral prerogative toward the end, however.
I think I have more than an idea of what her answer would be~. And I'll atone for that later when I can do so properly, you have my word. Or should I say my tongue?
It wasn't disappointing, if that's what you're asking. Kanon herself only has use to those who are willing to use her, of which the number among you is quite low. So in that sense, their choice, regardless of who the other party was, was an agreeable one.
Hahaha, your way of manipulating me into finding a way to see you again?
[She does miss Sonya, doesn't she? There has been so much going on - but she has never once felt confused about what she believed was the understanding between them.]
If we had found the other party, I reckon the outcome would have been the same. Unless someone killed her on the spot and we dragged the second to the gallows... Well, I'm sad to have missed the chance.

[ It's an awkward spot to be trapped in, a kind of in between. He smiles though, as he's want to do. ]
No. I've been in far worse situations, though I'll confess I usually have my sword with me. And yourself?

[ He opens his hands wide, a clear show of no weapons. ]
I received a harpoon last week, but it's in the cabana rather than with me. When this situation clears, I'll fix that, of course.

Haha, should I say you're welcome? I could have of course, but I don't see why I would. You have something to contribute unlike Chai.

week 5, early tuesday morning
My dear Quin, both the aggrieved and the sin itself are pitiable in different ways. Luckily, compassion is a virtue even for sinners.
no subject
Is it? That explains why the church is so keen on it, given they have so much need of redemption.
Sonya, philosophy this early in the morning? Please. You haven't the faintest notion of romance.
